RGIII Scores Big on Social Media

Move aside, Miley Cyrus. It’s September in Washington D.C., which means that nothing stands a chance at keeping our attention against the upcoming Washington Redskins football season.

In fact, engagement with the team is higher than ever, if that’s possible. Last season, rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III led the team to an NFC East title—only to see the season end with a playoff loss and subsequent ACL surgery. As RGIII prepares to begin his comeback at the season opener on Monday night against the Philadelphia Eagles, social media is abuzz.

Indeed, if you followed the public discourse in the city, you’d be forgiven for thinking that a knee reconstruction was the only notable thing we had going for ourselves. It was not uncommon to see #RGIII or #HTTR (“Hail to the Redskins”) trending on Twitter at various points throughout the summer—even without football games to discuss.

As we are for all major events, Zoomph was there to monitor the real-time social media conversations. In addition, our proprietary ZPoints ranking tool determined who had the highest influence when it came to the Skins and RGIII.

The Redskins’ official Twitter, understandably, has a strong influence, but seeing Skins linebacker Nick Barnett rank #2 on the list illustrates the unique power of Twitter. Social media sites allow people to interact with athletes and other celebrities in ways unprecedented just a few years ago, and clearly, Barnett’s fans love having this access.

D.C, like much of the country, is counting down the days to the approaching season, and that’s being reflected in social media conversations. No matter what happens, #HTTR.
