How to Get Social on Valentine’s Day

Hold on to your chocolates and roses: Valentine’s Day isn’t just for couples anymore. While presents and fancy dinners are nice, social media marketers also have a lot to gain from the year’s most heart-warming holiday.

Why, you ask? Although it’s said that money can’t buy love, CNN has reported differently, estimating that Americans collectively spent around $19 billion on Valentine’s Day gifts last year. And whatever the cynics might say, the feelings of love and appreciation also translate over social media. Salesforce, for instance has reported that around three-quarters of social media chatter regarding the day is ultimately positive content. That means this week represents a chance to reach fans when they’re feeling good and ready to spend money—and for marketers, that’s a dream scenario.

Brands are already starting to take advantage this year, when fans are feeling good and ready spend money (a business’ dream!). If you want to leverage the same opportunities, follow these tips for most successful Valentine’s Day social campaign.

1) Show your heart: There aren’t many days that encourage you to show off your personality quite like Valentine’s Day. Try creating a short Instagram video to incorporate your brand—or better yet, the actual people on your team—to share your personal side with fans.

2) Put yourself out there: We recommend creating a thoughtful, personalized hashtag that cleverly ties your brand to the holiday. Just like speed dating, being generic will only serve to make you forgettable when social users have a sea of other candidates  (and in this case, content) to choose from. Instead of using the hashtag #ValentinesDay or #Love, create something memorable that sets your brand apart and makes it more fun for users to share and spread your message.

3) Find your true Valentine: For social media marketers, finding ‘the one’ is really finding the ‘ones’. This means you should focus on pinpointing high influencers, or social media users who have the capacity to influence others’ decision-making. With the right tools, you can even locate high influencers for your brand (people that have influence and have expressed interest in your industry or product)—giving you a match made in social heaven.
